hi, just bought my first sax today, never held one before never mind played one. dont know if it is working properly, does the high octave key not open when 'g' key is depressed or should it open all the time when key next to thumb rest is pressed?

No, it should not open. A second octave vent located midway between the neck and the octave key should open.
