I've only heard of a low A alto once, and they seem pretty cool. When were they made? Have any of you played one before?

It sounds pointless to have a low A, but looks cool. If I had one I'd use it. Anyways, Ornette Coleman ordered Grafotn saxes once a year for so many years and in 1994 he had a white enamelled Selmer alto sax that descended to low A.

Selmer did indeed make a few of these, yet they had a very false tone toward the lower end, especially the low B, Bb, etc.

Check out Saxpics.com for more info on the selmers.

Low a alto's pop up on eBay from time to time too.
