Has anyone here played Steve Goodson model sax mde by LA Sax? I've heard it plays well, especially in the altissimo range. I've also heard that they're quite heavy. n nh

Ok, then. I have no experience with the horns, but I do know that there were many, er, problems with the goodson horns, something about buyers not getting their product or something. Don't quote me, but something shifty was going on, that's really all I know. Just don't expect too many replies to this thread is all.

My $.02

LA Sax seems to really have stepped up in the last year. I've heard of a good amount of people using the 750 alto and 850 tenor (usually not in green)

In a thread on another forum it was said that some people got their horns within a week and some within three.

Neither have I tried nor seen the Steve Goodson model in person so I cannot contribute about it's sound.

If the 750-850 models are designed by SG, he drilled this one, I picked up the 750, and out the box the horn sang, strong, but not where I wanted it, after the meyer 5 - geo 3 - and rov. rubber, I picked up the Otto Link, metal 6*, with the otto lig. it was too bright, moved for the Eddie DII, with both flaps covering the insert, tilted forward. I got a little darker, lastly switched from the fibracell to the plasticover, and bingo. all ranges in good tune. the fast action blew me away, but during changes, notes tend to seep through the blend. sent it out for professional adjustment, and a little rise in the palm keys, and I am currently waiting for the return product.

I know there are alot of horns favored by most, and I cant help but wonder if some are missing the opportunity to save money by just picking up the 750 and taking a test drive.

Sax came in today, I dont know how to tell you, I will never switch from the LA SAX 750 Alto's, if you play jazz, pop, fusion, rock, and love saving money, the standard set up is the first step, the set up I use for Jazz in seamless, it flows without effort it seems, the repair guy was also a skeptic before he took the job, his 1st one, he had heard so much bad press about the model, after play testing it for two days, his written comment, there is nothing wrong with this horn. the craftsmanship is good, the tone is good, the configuration is good, its just about finding the right set up for your sound. and included some instruction about how to take it out of the case.

according to him, there has not been a horn from any maker, that could not stand adjustment out of the box.

his stamp of approval has helped me in my decision to purchase another one for my church band, currently playing the Martin C-Melody with the super set up. Meyer tenor mpc. lavoz #3 reeds

his suggestions: Change the Resos to plastic, and use a dark mpc. and fine cain reeds. I can darken the horn 20-30% keeping me within range of my preference

only difference, this one is coming in Gold Lac.

Ok, new LA SAX 750 Gold Lac. just came in from wwbw, open box $850, Protect Hard case, standard plastic mpc. & lig. on Jason Dumars waiting list for awsom engraving, and then off for new plastic resos, and adjustment. on order Meyer #5 Mpc. EDDIE D II Lig. have not decided on the reeds I want to try yet.

Black Laq. 750 still holding up, my friend Steve has put his big four horn on the back burner, to spin it, seeing how it holds up in comparison. gigging every weekend, and just did an outdoors performance with no changings in the action or sound, he does not like the mpc. so were changing the neck cork to fit his rubber mpc.

only adjustment he made was the thumb hook was positioned for my interest which differed from his, one bad thing, he makes the horn sound much better then me. :-( other than that soooooooo far so good.

Three points:

1. No comments on Mr Goodson yet, he has not returned my emails, but I
understand he has suffered some damage to Katrina.

2. Jason Dumars, has alot on his plate and can not get to my horn yet.

3. LA Sax 750-850 has some parts that were made in Taiwan, but is assembled
and marketed in the United States.

4. Blk 750 still holding up, playing an hour a day practice, three hours Sunday,
new tone development breaking through the jazz set up, I really like it alot.
never mind my last comment on never switching just tried the new Cannonball
at Sam Ash, while picking up some reeds, and the horn is smoking.
