I have to say growling is something very fun to do. Yet i have been told i do it a bit to much, i even recall doing it during a salsa song solo in a jazz combo . Yet it sounds great in rock, blues, etc.

My advice is try not to over do it; use it where it is appropriate. If you want to listen to some really cool uses of the growl listen to Earl Bostic.
