Yes, we all know him by now. The seemingly outlandish judge on one of America's #1 watched show, American Idol. Simon is known to be the "bad guy" by giving harsh and what seems to be un-related advice to the singers at hand. Some of his remarks have left a never ending burn on some contestants and has left a bad taste in the mouth of the masses. But my question is, why?
I think Simon is probably the best judge on the show. Why? He gives real criticism. Maybe as a musician I am just too used to this and take what he says as something that would help, but I do agree that before I got serious about music and watched AI, I too would think Simon was the horse's rear end. However, now that I have become further advanced in music and actually appreciate solid advice to help anything in my playing, I think at least 95% of Simon's words are meant in some way to help the musician at hand. But everyone in the audience boos him when Randy or Paula sugar coat things so that the contestant's feelings aren't hurt. But here's my take; they don't need nicely put words and the lies that Randy and Paula sometimes feed them. What they need is the truth, and I really think Simon Cowell delivers that at least 95% of the time.
Have some of his comments been un-called for (like this season with Mandesa)? You bet, but as a judge, I think he's the best one. Now someone tell me otherwise

I'd sooner later myself than watch that show. Watching an endless parade of pop-star style biting teenage angst ridden idiots is in no way gratifying to me. =P
That said, I have seen a few of Simon's comments in clips on GoogleVids. That guy is hilarious. Everyone hates him because he just speaks his mind, and it's not PC. Did you really expect pop-star wannabes and their fans to actually take scathing comments (helpful or not) with a grain of salt and an eye to the future?
It's far beyond the scope of their fragile little worlds. =P
Err... yeah, anyways.

I didn't know everyone did hate him, I thought most of us secretly cheered him on as he deflated yet another incomprehensibly self confident egotist... Or maybe it was just me... ahem... _________________ "Cease this infernal tootling!" Montgomery Burns. |

I honestly hate American Idol in the first place...
I only watch the first round where all the bad people sing and he tears them down. It's great, and half the time he's completely honest and they run out crying. How can people not notice that they suck so bad? |

I often wonder the same thing. You have to imagine that their family members, being tone-deaf themselves, were cheering them on the entire time at home. Otherwise, they would have had somebody tell them that they desperately needed voice training, and wouldn't have even come to the first round of judging. _________________ Thomas Hay
