My personal favorite is Paul Desmond, but I'd say Charlie Parker has influenced the world the most.

I have 3: Charlie Parker, Sonny Rollins and Cannonball Adderly.

Doesn't anyone remember Freddy Gardner?

For jazz, I would go with John Coltrane, Sonny Rollins, and/or Charlie Parker.
Adderley, however great of player he was, wouldn't top my list for the greatest saxophonist(s) of all time. The above 3 had much more influential power and overall status and respect than Adderley. Adderley is just another killer hard bop saxophonist to listen to for me.

I'd probably say Charlie Parker, John Coltrane, Lester Young, Coleman Hawkins, Benny Carter, blah, blah, blah...This is a very open-ended question It is who YOU think is the best, who is your personal favorite. Besides, you didn't even state a genre. Classical, jazz, Rock & Roll? Without this critical information your question would be nearly impossible to answer.
That's my two cents.

Re: Best Sax Player Ever?Classically, Jean Marie Loundeix. In jazz coltrane and the bird are the kings. Sonny shouldnt be making albums anymore. His playing had dropped off dramatically since the mid 90's. Parker's harmonic idea's were revolutionary and have had more influence than any other sax player.

Considering what Sonny Rollins has given to jazz for so many years I find it hard to agree that he shouldn't be making albums anymore. Even if his playing isn't as good as it was in the past, I think there is more depth to his music than that. I saw him a few years back in London and would say as a great musician and performer he still has alot to offer.

I have to stay Contemp. let me see, there is Gerald Albright-Dave Sanborn-The Grover W. - Boney James-Dave Koz, just to name a few, pushing back the date a bit, you have the Train, Ben Webster, Stan Getz, Charlie Parker, CB, and up to date classic jazz player Joshua Redman
the legends: Grover Washington Jr. & David Sanborn
