Cork GreaseWhat type of cork grease do you use? According to one chemist, the cheap $1.50 stick of cork grease you buy at the store isn't good at all. He says his stuff works in not only greasing the cork down, but preserving it.Has anyone ever tried this cork grease or any other "quality" greases before? http://www.doctorsprod.com/DrsProduct.html

I use Vandoren cork grease (my music store sells vandoren EVERYTHING). Or, if i don't have any on me, I use chap-stick (it works, no joke).
That site is an example of some guy who's just trying to make money by lying to the public. Regular cork grease has treated me great since i started.

I agree. It's just I wanted to know if anyone has ever tried that guy's "quality" cork grease before.

I use either Yamaha or Selmer brand cork grease (I really like the Selmer grease, somewhat smoother than the Yama stuff).

I use chap-stick. The 89 cent chapstick we get is cheaper than cork grease... Does the exact same thing... Greases the cork. That's whole point of it... I don't need no fancy pants chemically perfected slop to help slip my mouthpiece on.
I has s-spoken!

I checked my case and apparently I use York cork grease. I think it works pretty well, but it was kinda expensive, like $2.00 at BrookMays.

Man, our ideas of expensive are off.
I think my Yamaha stuff was $3.00/tube off WWBW and I got two tubes; one for alto one for tenor.

Well said, Geek. I use cork grease on my student horn, and chap-stick on my super 20. The chap-stick also kind of moisturizes the cork and helps it last longer.

Well,m compared to the other prices for cork grease that's expensive, but it's by no means even nearly as expensive as that doc's "quality cork grease"

It's kind of sad that people actually spend that kind of money for grease. Grease. Heck... Just go out for fried chicken before every gig. You get a meal, and grease your cork all in one, and at some chicken places you can get a meal for less than you pay for Doc's grease.

OK that's just weird

Hahahaha, lol! Thanks altosaxgeek, that just made my day!
Yeah, I use the Selmer grease. It came with my horn.

That cheap yellow-capped stuff they're selling nowadays sucks completely. If I had a music shop I would be ashamed to sell that crap.
Vandoren's cork grease is good. Yamaha's is similar, if I remember correctly. One year in school I ran out of cork grease and instead of buying some more I just went to chapstick (cherry flavored, even) - worked fine till the stick ran out.

Chap-stic does make a great substitute for cork grease, but cork grease dosen't help chapped lips...
or taste as good....
i had a bad mik-up experience in middle school that i'd rather not talk about

I just use plain ol' vasaline petroleum jelly. A 13oz tub of the stuff is only about $4 USD.

i use normal cork grease and tried using some Aveeno (the thing that helps moisturize ur skin) and it worked fin.

um...I feel a bit sheepish, but I haven't used cork grease on my student Yamaha for 5 years, and the cork is a perfect as the day I bought the horn...

did you use anything as a subsitute? chap-stick?
When I just started playing sax I didn't use cork grease sometimes and the cork started to split. Then I got it replaced.
