IMHO... Sanborn. No question. I still need to check out David Bowie's 'Young Americans' album... Sanborn's all over that.

CMelodyMan, in addition to Sanborn, there are several hundred more that you will want to listen to in the future. If you will send an email I will forward a 63 page list of Billboard Top 40 hits from "The History of Top 40 Saxophone Solos-1955-2005" which feature many styles of rock/pop/funk sax playing. You can download many of the hits and get an idea of the various styles and techniques that have been used through the years. JSAXL@aol.com

John, with al the requests you get for the list, maybe you should consider charging money for it.
Actually, I think you do have a similar version of that list with a CD for around $11, right?

Hey, I am sorry that I missed your posts. I tried to find an email on the profile but unable to locate it. When I click on email it gives me a private message box and the list is too large to send via a private message.
Send an email to me at JSAXL@aol.com and I will forward the free 63-page list. Glad to.
CMelodyMan, that is correct. We have a CD version of "The History of Top 40 Saxophone Solos-1955-2005" that is up to 311 pages and full of bios, photos and and historical points. I can forward info about that as well with the email so contact me and I will return the above list as an attachment.

best rock & roll sax tone/sound in my opinion came from a 'not really' rock & roll player- namely Sam Butera from Louis Prima's band- check our their version of Saint Louis Blues, or Buena Sera Senorina.

jules, I totally agree. One of my first inspirations was seeing Sam in a movie that was filmed at Lake Tahoe in the 50s. The Prima band was playing at a resort and brought the house down. Butera's sound and stage energy has stayed in my mind since that movie! Anyone looking for a strong energy filled show stopping tenor player should find the old movies or purchase the recordings and enjoy.
