Honor Band Try-out tips

Does anyone have any tips for honor band try-outs?

Don't screw up! Wink

Seriously, try to go in there not nervous and know your music. That's the only way to go! :D

Well, for my province's honour band, the audition simply involved recording yourself playing a piece, and then a few scales. There weren't any actual walk-in auditions... Confused

I have to agree with JP on this one.

Screwing up is bad! Don't stop if you make a mistake - just keep on playing. Make sure you know your music well, and be confident when you walk in, while playing, talking to the clinician, and walking out.

Make sure you've mastered all your major scales - they will more than likely ask you to play one or more of them.

If they make you do some sight-reading, well, there's not really much you can do about that. If you're naturally good at it, then chances are you won't embarass yourself. If you aren't, then it's not the biggest thing you need to worry about. They don't usually make a huge judgement on your sight-reading ability. Also, don't stop if you make a mistake in the sight-reading, should there be any.

Know the music. That's the biggest thing.

For district honor-band, it's a taped audition, which means you can start over. State is live auditions, w/ sight-reading. That's the true test. I blew it last year. But this year, I hope to do better.
