I'd play oboe, french horn, or bass. The only one that I've tried so far is the bass, and I'm not that great at it. Guess sax is my calling.

That's a cool instrument, but what's even cooler is the 'Trombax' It's a trombone with a sax mouthpiece soldered onto it. It was used in a few jazz albums, and the one in the link.
In addition to the Trombax, I would play the Octocontracombinaltobasso. I'm all for weirdo hybrids~ Seriously though, it'd be the jazz flute like eric dolphy in Gazelloni

I'd play tympanis or the marimba, and then I'd play trumpet or cello. I would never play the viola.

If I didn't play saxophone, I'd probably be playing piano (which I do play), or maybe drums. Several years ago I did actually try and take up the drums briefly, but quit because it was so frustrating.
Last year, from time to time, I would go into the band room at school and do some stuff on the drum kit... like keeping time and working on my coordination. One day I did in fact try and play with a bassist, and man -- it is HARD to lock in with the bassist. It really forces you to listen and try to connect and become one unit, instead of two people keeping time.
Two summers ago I took up trombone, but stopped practicing when the saxophone took over my life even more. I could play a couple scales on it, but I wasn't the best at reading bass clef, as it was brand new to me. However, I still remember where Bflat and F are in the staff.
Also, when I was really young, I was into just messing around on the guitar (acoustic). Even though I dig jazz guitar stuff now like Jimmy Bruno, Wes Montgomery, and Kenny Burrell, acoustic guitar is much more enjoyable to listen to from time to time.
So yeah... I could have been playing piano, drums, trombone, or guitar if I hadn't chosen the saxophone (though I do play the piano, but not as a primary instrument).

I've always liked the idea of playing jazz/gypsy violin- even some of the elctric stuff with loads of effects on Zappa albums struck me as pretty sexy.

What would I play...Well, I have a whole woodwind section in my closet that I could play, if I weren't busy with my alto and tenor in two community bands, but let's see:
Eb sopranino clarinet, oboe (that one's coming on Friday 3/10/06), Bb clarinet, I'd love to try bagpipes, french horn, cello, harp, steel drum...ugh...did I forget anything??? Not sure. I'll keep thinking...
