Jody Jazz

Jody Jazz mouthpieces are hands-down the best jazz pieces on the market today. They have loads of guts and let you make your own sound with them. Their response is absolutely insane. They are also priced fairly reasonably, and get this: they come in different colors!! They come with Rovner ligatures and on top of it all, Jody has the best customer service of anybody I've dealt with.

Next best, in my opinion, is Phil Barone. The New York alto pieces are absolutely AWESOME. The only reason I chose the Jody over the Barone was because the Jody had more projection for a lead alto kind of sound.

Dukoffs are pretty good, but if you're going to get a Dukoff, get a vintage Dukoff. The newer ones aren't that great, IMHO.

What's your opinion on the Otto Link?
Bleeding Gums Murphy

Oh crap, I meant to post this as a reply to "Good Jazz Mouthpieces". Otto Link is one of the most respected mouthpiece makers of the past fifty years or so. Their tone edge line is great (and inexpensive) with very little resistance and a fairly dark jazzy tone. Never tried the STM's (i don't dig metal mp's on alto)
Bleeding Gums Murphy

Confused the new topic button with the post reply button.
CMelodyMan

Murphy, you seem to know a lot, you should consider joining this site, we could always use more sax players.

Aren't Jody Jazz mouthpieces made only out of plastic, not metal?
JPSaxMan

Nope. The ESP Series are metal pieces.

IMO, the Jody Jazz line of mouthpieces are WAY too much for a mouthpiece. The highest I'd ever pay is $250 MAYBE and Jody exceeds that limit quite well.

Sorry, not gonna pay $300 for a Jody Jazz when I can get a Dukoff for half that mouthpiece with a better reputation and possibly a better sound!
CMelodyMan

They really cost $300? I see people selling them on SOTW all the time for $70 and under. Confused Maybe I should grab one.
JPSaxMan

At a fraction of the cost of them MSRP or MAP, yea, go for it!
CMelodyMan

i checked it out on SOTW, and apparently we're not talking about the same Jody Jazz mouthpiece. the one people usually sell on there cost $107 new. Is this Jody Jazz mouthpiece still a good jazz mp?
JPSaxMan

Not sure which one's you're talking about...

Maybe those are the hard rubber ones? And yes, they're still good pieces.

But not to SAVE MY LIFE would I pay $320 for a mouthpiece!!!!
CMelodyMan

I agree.
CMelodyMan

I'm talking about the HR*, not the ESP.
Bleeding Gums Murphy

I'm talking about the Classic, the one that made Jody famous, the one that was based off of a hand-modified Runyon Custom that Santy Runyon himself customized for Jody. The Classics are made of plastic and hard rubber, so they're sort of a plubber, and the HR*s are pure hard rubber.
The ESP's are a little much(but amazing), and the HR is very similar to a Link Slant Sig but with more punch. The Classics cost $127 for alto and $137 for tenor from Jody's site (about 1/2 of your $250 limit, JP). Here are the links:

Like I said, new Dukoffs are really nothing special.

Murphy,

Have you ever played a metal piece? Especially a Dukoff? If so, how do you feel these Classic pieces compare?

Why am I gonna pay the price of a metal for a hard rubber if I'm not going to get what I want out of a rubber piece? See where I'm going? Exclamation
Bleeding Gums Murphy

Okay, here we go. I have played 2 Dukoffs. One was a modern D8(i think), and the other was a vintage hard rubber fluted chamber model. The modern one had a (really loud)very thin, sort of shrill and really bright sounding tone (think obnoxious), and the vintage was awesome, and similar to an old link. I would have bought the vintage one, but it cost like $350. The JodyJazz classic pieces have awesome response, and you can manipulate the sound a lot, from fairly dark to really bright and edgy using your embouchure and the spoiler. I usually don't use the spoiler for the music I play. They are very free-blowing with just enough resistance so that you know the note you're playing is going to come out right. They can go easily from pianississimo to fortississimo. They always have a very full sound, no matter how dark or bright or loud or soft you are playing.
JPSaxMan

Maybe I should get one with a return policy just in case!
Bleeding Gums Murphy

They come with one from Jody's site. And when you order it from them, you get this cool pouch thing to keep the mouthpiece in and a Rovner lig Cool
JPSaxMan

Which one do you have? Ruby red or classic? Question
Bleeding Gums Murphy

For alto it came in blue or black, and I have black.
JPSaxMan

Oh I thought you a had a tenor piece.

Ok....I think I'm gonna go with the Ruby Red whenever I can get $137 avaliable to my name!
Guest

For now I just play alto. I've played a tenor two or three times, but that's it. I'm looking to pick up a little tenor next year (rent one from school maybe) and maybe bari. Good luck with the JodyJazz. You won't be disappointed. I use an 8 on my alto and it's amazing. I'm actually playing right now.
Bleeding Gums Murphy

That last post was me. I forgot to put in the username.
JPSaxMan

I just put the LaVoix away myself

Now that I can hit altissimo G more, you should see me improv-ing. I eat breathe and sleep it now! Not that I didn't before, but now it's even more obsessive! Twisted Evil
Bleeding Gums Murphy

The JodyJazz pieces are great for altissimo. On my sax, up to altissimo D pops out very nicely.
JPSaxMan

You mean fourth D, or third D?

I'm talking third G up as far as the altissimo...I heard G is the hardest on tenor so I'm somewhat proud of myself :P
Bleeding Gums Murphy

I'm talking about D4.
It's insanely hard to get out, it kills your reeds, and it makes your lips bleed, but altissimo really sounds cool in a solo Cool
JPSaxMan

Sounds like you might be trying a lil TOO hard Exclamation

I hope you use the 'ooo' embouchure. It helps a ton (take it from me, I used the accepted clarinet embouchre not even knowing it for 98% of my sax career until within the past couple of months!) with altissimo and your sound overall. Once you start, you might go a lil flat, but once you get used to it you'll start building chops like crazy!
Bleeding Gums Murphy

I was kidding about the lips bleeding thing (although it can happen if you do it too much. Believe me, I've done it). I keep a stash of solid crap Ricos around just for altissimo practice. Wouldn't want to ruin my Alexanders that retail for about 4 bucks a reed. I do use the ooo embouchure.
Guest

I think I might check this out. If I don't like the mouthpiece, I think I'll just return it. What # facing do you use Bleeding Gums?
Bleeding Gums Murphy

I use an 8.
HG

I used an 8 JJ Classic Blue. It was fantastic. But it was a little open for me. I loved the colour, but not the tone as much. Right now I have the JodyJazz ESP yes, the 330 one. In fact I have 2. I got one used with a trade of $190 + my blue one for the ESP. I needed a backup so I got a special deal for the ESP Royale (the metal mouthpiece that is coated PURPLE) for 125US It was a great Deal, I never regetted it.

As far as how it plays, very warm sounding metal mouthpiece. Great projection and response. It doesn't chirp at all. With the spoiler in, it's a whole different world. It's a GREAT sounding mouthpiece and purple mouthpiece will definate attract the ladies..... (i'm working on a silver sax)
