Low A or Low Bb?

Ok, here it is, the official thread. Which do you prefer on a baritone, Low Bb (usually vintage horns) or Low A (modern)? Reasons?

Oh yeah, forgot to answer my own question.

Low Bb for me, I just get a certain sound out of the horn. It seems that when I play a low A, tha lowest notes just sound muffled, as does the entire low end. Maybe it's just me.

I'm totally the opposite. I normally play a Yamaha w/ a Low A, and I find that everything just sounds clearer on it. I've been having to play a vintage Conn while mine's in the shop getting cleaned, and I really have to work to get out low notes and some of the top end stuff.

That plus the Low A opens up a whole new world of soloing. We played something in Concert F in our combo, and I was next to the alto player, and at one point I hit the Low A, and he fluttered the trumpet player's plunger over the bell, and I got the Low G# out, and it was crazy.

Do you remember the model number or serial of the Conn? Some of the older ones do play like crap.

I have found that preferences are often formed by the tone qualities you are going for. If you want a vintage sound, than you're going to automatically dislike any modern horn, and vice versa.

All perception.

I prefer the Low A over the Low Bb.

I have played on two Selmer's (one of them a Bundy) and my current Yamaha 52. The one Selmer did have a Low A and I guess it depends on the sax b/c I feel the Yamaha kicked the Selmer's (156A) tail! The Bundy just, well, s*****!

But overall, I just prefer the extension of my lower range Cool

I understand that. I've always played on something w/ a Low A, and I got used to it. Having to go down to something w/out just feels foreign. I've actually had to pick up one of the schools other Yamaha's and run through solos and such on it, so I stay somewhat in practice for when I get my horn back.
