Your Favorite Jazz Tenor PlayerWho is your favorite jazz tenor player? If I had to choose a favorite then I'd probably say Richard Elliot or Lester Young.

Favorite tenor playerOne of them is Don Menza. Played in Buddy Rich's band for a few years among others. If you get a chance listen to him on on old 60's album "Mercy, Mercy, Mercy" especially on the song 'Channel 1 Suite.'

Thanks for the invite but I don't think I'm in the age range of your members. After reading other posts tonight, I see that most are high school age. I think I'm in the wrong forum! I should have been directed to the old fogey forum. But I have enjoyed your interesting observations and perspectives. Wish I was that knowledgeable at your age! Keep up the good work! I may still lurk as a guest if you don't mind.

Some of my favorite tenor player that I liked are. Sal Nestico, Sam Butera, Colman Hawkins, Dexter Gordon, King Curtis, Al Cohen, Stan Getz, and of course Coltraine. There are others. but these would top my list.

I like Brecker & Shorter, but my favorite player is Jay Breckenstein of Spyro Gyra. He's got a newer solo CD out. Spyro's last CD, "The Deep End" is absolutely awesome! Jay plays tenor on "Monsoon" and I believe it's his best work ever. They're a unique band and I've been a fan since '78.

Like your list! I'd personally go with that but probably add Lester Young & Stanley Turrentine to my list.....

Michael Brecker, Bob Mintzer, Lester Young, John Coltrane, and Chris Potter. That's pretty much my top 5 list.
I was lucky enough to see Chris Potter play with his band, Underground, in Edmonton a few months ago. He played at our city's flagship jazz venue, the Yardbird Suite (pun, eh?), and the show was packed to capacity! The house manager only let me in because I was a member of the Littlebirds (a big band run by the Yardbird), and let me tell you, that show was incredible! I just love the way his group combines to make a truly unique, experimental sound in jazz. Plus, Chris has such a loud, powerful tone, and amazing technique; it's just that much better seeing him play live.
I guess Chris Potter's my favourite tenor player.

Two players that are way underrated and deserve just as much credit as the other guys. Definitely

That list is basically the same as mine. And I, too, would probably put Chris Potter on top of it. Of course, it's so hard to limit it to five, but those choices are as good as any. Scott Hamilton is another player I really love listening to, but he's probably not one of my "top five."
By the way, I am incredibly jealous that you got to see Potter with Underground. That must have been absolutely amazing--it's too bad he's not coming to Seattle (as far as I know).

Lester Young for his tone and soulfulness (is that a real word?),
Stanley Turrentine for his.. well.. tone again and- to be honest- simplictiy,
Sonny Rollins for being jaw droppingly inventive,
a lot of old R&B guys (Jay Mc Neely, Sam Butera, Willis Jackson etc) for their musical 'swagger' and attitude....
probably a load of others that i can't think of at the moment too.
