Brands to avoid

Here's my list of sax brand's to avoid:

Schill
Helmke
German Engineering
French Enigineering

Anyone have any others that they wanna add to the list?
JPSaxMan

Venus
German-crafted saxophone (biggest e-Bay ripoff yet)
JazZz

Bentley the cheapo sax's constantly on ebay
Louis Scuderi

Zeus (any combination of capitalized letter except ZeuS)
Bariman

Have you played on a ZeuS, LS? I'm desperate to know something about them. I ask, and everybody shuts down. Any features you thought were cool?

Bariman
Louis Scuderi

I have played a ZeuS, it was their "intermediate" alto. Not bad, just very clunky keywork, horrible action, and very out of tune.
Bariman

Ahh, ok. Thanks for the info!

Louis Scuderi

No problem.

I'm not trying to go it against what you're saying, but how does " very clunky keywork, horrible action, and the fact that it's very out of tune" make it not bad?
Louis Scuderi

Well the horn looked VERY durable, and had a decent tone. So...

Myabe not quite "not too bad". Confused??:

^^ That's Steve Goodson btw, for those who might not know Cool

I lost all of my respect for Mr. Goodson when he started bashing SOTW, and altered the posts of several mutual members on his own forum for his self gain. All attempts to speak the truth on that forum were censored if not erased by Mr. Goodson. I don't know if any of you experienced the goings-on that I speak of, but I would personally warn to stay away from his forum lest his very childish attitude has changed.

I have little actual experience with L.A. Saxes, however.

Same here about Mr. Goodson, I've never tried an LA Sax.

Please stay on the subject of brands to avoid, and not about Mr. Goodson., unless you have personal experience with his line of saxophones.

Thanks,

It's OK. I just don't want trhe arguing going back and forth.

Older Antiguas. Yes. I did just say that. I played an older Antigua at a local music store and it stunk up the place. I also played a Cannonball, and didn't find it awesome enought to justify its price.

Avoid

Simba Instruments.

I couldn't refuse a tenor for under $200 and found out why. It had been on a slow boat from China and was rusted worse than my 1928 Buescher. The case was scary, as it was also falling apart already. Pretty deep gold lacquer on body and keys, but if you looked closely, it was already corroded and pitted. Did I mention that it didn't play... AT ALL???

Got my money back, thank Gawd.
Bariman

Ouch, that's rough. Thank you return policy.

Ebay can be great, but I feel like there should be a way to send a "Buyer Beware" message on some of the horns out there. In fact. A week after I returned the sax, I am positive I saw it relisted-- same seller, same description but $20 less. Like $20 would make that thing play... I feel sorry for parents who don't know better, and can't really afford a good horn who get these for their kids and when they can't play them, have to eat it when they can't even trade them in for a decent horn. It's criminal!!!

I'm new here but i can say that you are wrong about LA SAX. The la sax you want to avoid are the older ones, built in Taiwan, the brand was bought several years ago and now (if i'm not misstaken) it's a good affordable horn. I know i love them, you just have to buy the pro models. I have an alto and a soprano, both great. The sound is nice and mellow and the key action is smooth. They both are easy to tune... but hey granted i never played a super action 80.
I trully believe it's how the horn fits the indavidual...
my two cents...

LASax

me too!
I started on an LASax pro model - and it was great - a little sharp in the upper reg, but probably more to do with my weak embouchure and biting back then.
Very nice horn - great action (similar to my SA80II which I upgraded to) a whole lot better than the trashed-out Yam student model I rented!!
redneckbari

I have played an older L.A. Sax soprano...and LOVED it... and I am in no way a soprano kinda guy.....but i bought my own soprano off ebay last july....it is a "Cecilio" and I only paid $180....and it aint too bad...but it's not what i'd want to play every night on gigs. Another brand(s) to stay away from are baris by the likes of "Mason Pro" ,"Monique Pro", "Schill", and "Victory". These are just Bari's......so be careful.....
Steve Goodson

Actually, the LA Sax brand is manufactured and owned by Orpheus Music.
