Other Instruments

It's only hard to practice them when I have alot of school work. When I don't I play a different instrument "group" every day. For example:
Sunday-alto and tenor saxes
Monday-Bflat and bass clarinets
Tuesday- piano/organ
Wednesday-drums
Thursday-flute
Friday-guitar/mandolin
Saturday-mallet percussion(bells)
I normnally always practice every day for a few hours. I try to get in 2-3 hours a day, but since I have freshman year of high school coming up I don't know what the workload will be but I'll find a few hours those days(before school/after school/during school Twisted Evil
Let's just say I'm a devoted 14 year old musician Twisted Evil Twisted Evil
JPSaxMan

Hehe...join the club. If I don't practice at LEAST once day I feel $h!!tty and guilty plus somewhat crabby on top of it because I was withdrawn from my addiction for a day Sad Evil or Very Mad

that's ~cRaZy~ tenorsaxman!

I own:
a paris series III alto
holton 1909 tenor
some student geindhert flute
bandnow pocket trumpet
m-audio digital piano
cundy-bettoney wooden l.p piccolo.

I play:
*my alto
*I would play my tenor but it goes in for an overhaul in 2/3 weeks!
*pocket trumpet (it's a midget trumpet!)
*I do a little synth/mixing work with the piano, I can't fully play piano but *I used it to teach myself like advanced chords and triads and theory stuff, so I can play begginer/intermeddiate paino

I all so own one of those recorders from elementary school if that counts! When I was walking around the other day, I went into this science store and they had a 'science of music' section and I found this little toy called a 'Sax-o-flute' for $5 bucks and I can play that! you design it into the instrument of your choice and it sounds like a sax! I'm a thrill for anything sax :P
MySaxMax

I play the violin, alto sax, and piano. I have a guitar and tried playing that for awhile but never really enjoyed it.
Bariman

Can play well:

Baritone sax
Tenor Sax
Bb clari
Bass Clari
Bass Guitar

Tully

I currently play flute, sax and piano. I've played guitar for several years, and can get around on bass, but don't have much time for either anymore; I'm just too busy, unfortunately. Also, I have briefly played trumpet and oboe.
phantoms_shadow

WOW!!!! Shocked Shocked Shocked Shocked And I thought I played a lot of instruments! I play the clarinet, alto sax, and french horn. You might be wondering where the french horn came from, it was a spur of the moment thing. lol At my school I play the most instruments out of everyone. I get called a one man band all the time, but i guess you got me on that one. Good job.
reisio

  • guitar
  • piano
  • ukulele
  • nose flute
pretty bad at them all :p
saxmaniac

reisio wrote:
nose flute

That sounds interesting. I think I've heard of that before. It's some kind of primitive, tribal flute. Is it really played through the nose? Shocked
reisio

For the one I have, you blow air through your nose and it exits from one opening over your mouth, which you use to control pitch.
phantoms_shadow

What is an ukulele?
JPSaxMan

Type of stringed instrument...a really small guitar that originated from the Hawaiian Islands Cool
reisio

Jacob

Aside from the saxophones (alto, tenor, soprano), I play piano and a little on clarinet.
tenorsax3515

i mainly play tenor sax, but on the side i like to play alto, trumpet, a little flute, trombone, piano, violin, and drums
JimMetcalf

Other Instruments

Play A-T-S-B saxes-double on clarinet- play trumpet/cornet/flugle with College jazz band

Trmpt and sax/clarinet use almost same airstream technique-focus-velocity for tone projection etc

I am an older (1941 vintage )player and this was very common when I grew up-small town in Maine-only a few available chairs to be filled etc-so played both brass and sax to improve selection choices!
altosax4ever

WOW you do a lot, don't you? Do you happen to have any recordings of yourself? You sound like a great player!
Tully

I palyed clarinet for the first time today (much easier than I thought, actually--the embouchure felt pretty comfortable after an hour or so, and the break is definitely awkward, but not as bad as I thought it would be). I guess I'll be adding clarinet to my repertoire...
OldEyes

The drum kit.
itsabadreed

I find it AMAZING that noone here seems to play both clarinet and flute.
In order to become a professional sax player, it is VERY important to be able to double on them. Oboe and bassoon also help to give you that extra versatility that helps you get gigs.

I play:
sop/alto/tenor/bari sax
clarinet
flute
oboe
guitar
drums
latin percussion
reisio

in order to become a professional sax player, it is VERY important to be able to play a sax and get paid for it, nothing more :p

With all due respect, I beg to differ. Of course, there are plenty of jazz superstars, as it were, that play just sax. However, a lot of less well-known musicians depend on the gigs they can get by playing sax, flute, and clarinet, plus whatever else they can. One example would be my sax teacher: although jazz sax playing is what he really loves, he plays the Reed 1 book at all the Broadway-style shows here in Seattle, and also has a much wider student clientele since he teaches clarinet and sometimes flute. Very few people seem to earn a living doing nothing but playing sax. If you can/do, that's awesome. It just doesn't work out very often, so IMO, it's best to be prepared for a more likely situation.

I think versatility is important. As well as specialising in one instrument, it is extremely useful in my experience to have a good knowledge in at least another (piano as a wind player is very useful) and basic knowledge of a couple other instruments. As well as giving you more possiblities for work, it gives you a much better understanding of the functions of each instrument in a group. Particularly if you are a leader of a band it is very important to have a good awareness of the functioning of the other instruments...composing and arranging would be another useful skill to add.

Well, I play saxophone, flute and I'm learning clarinet, if that's any consolation! I'd love to be able to double in shows/gigs. I also play a bit of piano and guitar, but not much.

Now...what I'd like to also be able to play is a different question. I would love to be able to play all instruments...but unfortunately, time and money restrain. Smile So I'm picking them up, one at a time, slowly...
JPSaxMan

And I was learning flute...but it got taken away (by the school)...waaah Sad
JazZz

in theory I can play flute..i can finger all the notes and i can sight read music normally with it but I can't hold an embouchure for more than like 3 seconds..flute is really hard to get steady and I just didn't have the patience for it (and when I played it in the practice rooms girls gave me funny looks Wink )
Louis Scuderi

ROFL!!! How did it get taken away? Did you run over it with your van? Twisted Evil Twisted Evil Twisted Evil
JPSaxMan

I was using it to beat my crappy sidekick bari player...Laughing

No, actually, it was just that real flute players needed it more than I did Very Happy

Uh oh...a flautist read that Razz
Tully

No worries. I know plenty of stupid flute players.
JPSaxMan

Hey who corrected my spelling? Somebody wanna be demoted as a mod?!?!?!
CMelodyMan

JPSaxMan wrote:

Me Smile . It is spelled "flutist" BTW, I hope you were only kidding about demoing someone, as that seems like a kind of senseless reason to demote someone.
JPSaxMan

I meant to spell it that way...flute players hate being called flautists...and I guess I can't demote...well...you get the idea
CMelodyMan

JPSaxMan wrote:

I know Wink . BTW flautist is another way to spell one whos plays the flute, however I've noticed "flutist" to be a lot more commonplace.
JPSaxMan

Yea the demotion thing was harmless Mr. Green
altosax4ever

'Flautist' is the correct way to spell it. Try no to use the other, last time i did that in front of a pro flautist they laughed at me. Oh, and JP, I've corrected your spelling dozens of times. Razz
JPSaxMan

...wha?

Evil or Very Mad...*pulls out gun*

^^That's an inside joke Laughing...sorry to get off topic!

Mommy? Wink
SaxoAK

I play Soprano Sax, Alto Sax, Tenor Sax, Bari Sax, Bass Sax(when needed), Piano, Bassoon, Percussion (Specialisation in timpani and mallets), and clarinet. My fav. tho is def. my baby Duke - my Alto Yamaha YAS23
acdcgraphics

All my little musical babies...

I sing (does that count as another instrument???) Anyway, I used to sing and record my own music back in high school and college, so I've played and one time or another:

Guitar
Keyboards
Drums
Trumpet (while Drum Major, I filled in for a practice-- FUN!)
Bari Sax (but my rt pinky couldn't reach C, so only one time in Jazz band)
Tried flute and sucked at it
alto clarinet

Currently play:
Alto sax- principal instrument
Tenor - LOVE it, got my old Conn in August '05
Eb sopranino clarinet - played it in HS, now I own a 1925 Kolhert!!
Bb clarinet - sold my 5th grade bundy for a Noblet wood- beautiful thing

Ethic instruments I own/occassionally play:
Armenian duduk, bagpipe chanter (would love to learn bagpipes!), ocarina, panpipes

Wishlist:
Oboe- this will be my next musical baby, would love to try harp and French Horn but doubt I'd ever own them. Oh, I'd really dig a sopranino sax and an alto clarinet
JPSaxMan

Yikes...sounds like you've had your hands on quite the musical stuff, eh? Laughing
Louis Scuderi

I haven't seen many people who prefer alto clarinet over bass, do you like instruments keyed in Eb? Smile
acdcgraphics

fun stuff!

It's wacky, you know some people collect stamps or old coins, but ever since I had the opportunity to play the tiny Eb clarinet in high school (it was a beautiful Selmer wood with silver keys, my Bb clarinet of those days was still my resonite Bundy)-- I have vowed to have one of that quality and to collect the instruments that I always wanted to play.

I suppose I do lean toward the Eb instruments, but I love how saxophone keywork is the same regardless of Eb or Bb-- I'm a simple girl, need things to be not so complicated or it takes the fun out of it... )

I keep my repairman busy because I've bought old instruments that need love, he he he! I wish I could afford to get my clarinets all cleaned up, the little Eb and the Noblet are pretty dull looking, the keys are so dull and tarnished. He polished one just to show me what they would look like and GAWSH was that pretty! Wish I had a way to play them all, just not enough time I'm afraid Sad
darby dylan

i play sax and also piano.but my main instrument is sax
claritenordm

Right now I play clarinet for concert band, tenor sax in jazz and marching. I'm also decent at flute, alto sax, piano, bass clarinet, trumpet, and guitar, and I can doodle on basically anything that isn't a double reed (never tried them).
