Improv

Do you guys have any tips on how to improv?
JazZz

*Learn some Blues, Mixolidian, and Dorian Scales...
*Take the melody of a jazz song you like and mess around with it
*If you can read chord symbols:
In the jazz play-a-long books, there is a melody on the top and a solo part on the bottom with the chords, if you can read chords write out all the chords as triads and play them all, it will let you understand the piece more and than it's easier to change your scale when you're improving.
ex: C7 Chord = C, E, G, B (remember the 7th to B,not C) = 1, 3, 5, 7

If you're gonna improv for people to hear... Tone tone tone tone tone. First find YOUR tone, make it your own. Learn scales until they start to run out of the ying yang. Listen, listen, listen, to all of the greats, and some of the not-so-greats, any instrument. I'm listening to Jaco right now... amazing.

Like Bird said, "First your master the music, then you master the horn, then you forget all that $#!T and play."

Learn your stuff, and then forget it and just groove, man. Batman
