Number on Tenor Sax

I was playin my sax today and for the first time i noticed this little teeny sequence of numbers engraved in the body right above the seam where the bell starts to curve out. its not the serial number- thats engraved on the bell. i don't know what it is, anybody here have an idea?
oh yeah. my sax is a '38 balanced action if that helps narrow it down.

It could be the patent number. Can you give us the number exactly and any other lettering?

oh yeah. the number is 16656. thats it.
and it can't be the patent number because that is on the bell too.
its the wierdest thing and i can't believe that i just noticed it.

i hope we can figure it out.

Is it factory engraving, or does it look like it was done latter?

You can go there to find your serial#. I looked and obviously you can't rely on that to give the date of manufacture. Problems like that have had happen with the late Mark VI's and even the VII's so don't feel out of place Wink

i can't tell if the numbers are new or old. i'm pretty sure they're old but by the complete oddity of it it might be new.

i know its not the serial number though. the serial number, all the patent numbers, all that is on the bell.

I honestly have no idea. However, I do know someone who might. Pete Hales, aka Saxpics is a very well-versed saxophone historian, and he could probably solve your problem. His site alone might give you the needed information, but if you are still at a loss, email him. Good luck.
