Guest

I've been playin' for 4 years.
JPSaxMan

The two of you that have been playing for four years...I assume you're in school. What grade are you currently in?
Guest

You're in high school right?
JPSaxMan

Yessum.

Just finished my sophomore year yesterday!
altosaxgeek5

Umm... Almost a year. I'm still a beginner... Kinda.
JPSaxMan

Wow? Really?

I imagined you as having around my experience.

You sound very educated for having one year experience! That makes up for the years you are behind the curve! :D
tenorsax man

How long I've played

I started my brass and woodwind studies in 7th grade.I am now going into 9th grade. I crammed all this instrumental study in like 2 years. Exclamation
Guest

Started in 5th grade; I'm now 43. So....33 years? Shocked

You need to have your classical stuff down tho. No college will accept you on your jazz ability alone...hard fact I had to face Exclamation and now I'm four years behind the curve!
tenorsaxman

How long I've been playing

This will be my third year. I am going into freshman year of high school this year.I thinking of filling in on the other brass and woodwinds this year aside from tenor sax and bass clarinet ( You'll know what I mean if you read my introduction.LOL)
JPSaxMan

Well you spread yourself TOO thin you'll sound like crap on the two areas!
Hiya

I started clarinet in 5th grade and the saxophone in the midst of 6th grade. My 7th grade year has just ended so... I've been playing for about 1 1/2 year (I'm planning to play from now, to the rest of my life lol). I've also play the trumpet, alto clarinet, tenor, drumset, piano and flute pretty decently. Don't worry, I practice the alto a lot :P.
saxmaniac

Do you play any other saxes besides alto?
CMelodyMan

I must be the only person here who plays nothing but sax!
Thomas

I've been playing sax for 5 years. I started on trumpet in grade 7, and played that until Christmas the same year. I hated it, and wanted to try the saxophone. It was Lisa Simpson (from the TV show, not one of our new members...) that got me interested in the sax. :D So, ever since January of 2001, I've been blowing away at the sax! :D
CMelodyMan

I'm glad you decided to switch from trumpet to sax. :D That was a great idea. If my brother was here right now, he'd kill me for what I just said. He's a trumpet player, and me and him are always arguing over which is better, the trumpet or the sax, but we all know that I'm right and he's wrong. No instrument beats the saxophone! :D
JPSaxMan

*##! right man! Cool

Then again just make sure Miles Davis didn't hear that otherwise he'll be turning over in his grave! Shocked
Lisa Simpson

I've been playin the tenor for...this will be my.......6th year

trumpet is nothing. doesn't even have a chance when compared to a sax
Thomas

Haha, you guys are hilarious!
JPSaxMan

That's why we're sax players! Laughing Cool
bmj1221

WHOA Shocked :D

*Bows in repsect*

Not used to seeing double digit numbers on this thread; 3, 5, 8, 7, 2, 1...31! Shocked Exclamation
Thomas

Doc,

I looked at your website, and saw that really wild coloured sax on the home page. Is it true that you converted an old c-melody into that? That is quite an accomplishment! How does it play?
Lisa Simpson

cool lacquer on the instrument too.
Doc Frazier

It plays great.

I have two altos in the works for straightening and one of them is being converted to low A, a King bari to be straightened, a Buescher stencil bass sax is being restored after being used as a flowerpot; I'm going to do the body in Kameleon purple with 24K gold keys, neck and bell. I have a Conn 6M to restore with the key work updated to modern system, and a Conn 12M to restore w/ conversion to low A. Not to mention the other saxes and clarinets to repair/rebuild.
JPSaxMan

Sounds like ya got your work cut out for ya Laughing
yoshiplaysthesax

wow i have created a popular subject
-88-

Wow! What a range of experience on this forum! I have only been playing for about a year...which makes me an absolute beginner...and here is the funny part, I am 61 (hah!). Though I've been at the piano for years woodwinds are new to me.

This forum proves that chronological age has little to do with saxophone knowledge. I have already learned more from people in high school in this forum than I have from my peers (who are too set in their ways). You all are smarter and nicer than the people I was in school with.

Do I regret not picking up the saxophone in high school? You bet! So you are way ahead of me, but I can learn from the more experienced of you. Thanks for being here.
JPSaxMan

Thanks for sharing the experience with us 88! Cool
Thomas

Thanks, 88, that means a lot to us. I guess us band students are just a completely different body from the rest of high school. As the French say, "avant-garde". Cool
darby dylan

i started when i was five so now i play already for 9 years
JPSaxMan

Wow darby,

You're younger than I am yet you have more experience. Then again I started when I was 10, so that could be why Embarassed
Bariman

I have been playing bari about five years, started tenor sax a year before that, and have been studying music now for eight years.

Bariman
saxismyaxe

Wow did thinking about this question make me feel old. I started with the Sax (from Clarinet) When I was 6, so that means I've been playing for 32 years now! Damned, I should be another Charlie Parker by now, what happened? Confused??:
BuffaloBariSax

This will be my eighth year playing sax. I started out in fifth grade on alto, and was "first chair", or whatever you wish to call it, both years. In seventh, I was fourth alto before switching over to bari. I played bari seventh and eighth grade, eighth grade in both concert and jazz band. Freshman year I played bari in concert and tenor in jazz. Sophomore year through now I've played bari in both, although there was one night last year during pep band that I felt some Coltrane, and played tenor for half of the basketball game.

I"m with you in some ways 88, I've been playing for less than a year and I find the information on this site to be outstanding.I started when I was 50 but I had NO prior music experience. It all started because I couldn't get my 10 year old interested in playing the sax Rolling Eyes . she played the violin and Piano and she seemed to be good at both but the passion just wasn't there Crying or Very sad , I on the other hand have always loved music and always regretted giving up the flute in 4th grade after about 3 lessons Embarassed
I finally became a stay at home mom {my husband calls me a NOT so stay at home mom} with my second child after 25 years of work and that gave me the time to take a shot at it and I LOVE IT.
JPSaxMan

^^That's wicked Very Happy

The bigger, the better. And of course, bari is bigger than alto or tenor

But a BASS is da man (horn!) :-I
musicalprodigy

Laughing Now, call me dumb, but ewhats a bass sax?
Doc Frazier

go to this site:

http://community-2.webtv.net/guspratt/basssax/

this is the pics of the bass that I bought last year and am currently doing a full restoration.
Bariman

Doc: Wow, I remember seeing some pics of that bass a while ago on your site. How does she play? I know any vintage bass takes some skill, but is it worth it (like there's a question Cool )? I have seen a lot of Lyon and Healy bass's around.

Looking good!

Doc Frazier

She actully played when I got her home, but the previous owner had done some repairs that actually made some things worse. I have had to take her completely down to a bare skeleton with no keys, posts, etc.... just to repair the body. I haven't had a chance to work on her lately as I have been very busy with customers horns. I currently have a 4-6 month backlog. I'm planning on updating some of the keys to make it more ergonomic and had thought about satin silver on the body and gold plate the keys. Once I saw the kameleon purple, that is what the body is going to be and gold plate the bell inside and out and the keys.
Prophetic_Sax

Cool ....well, I started playing when I was 8 years old until I was 25, and that was only because I didn't own my own sax Crying or Very sad ....I then began playing other instruments, with the thought of getting back to my first love, which was the tenor sax Very Happy ....just bought 2 around Christmas of 2004, so I'm back in the swing of things....so as far as playing experience, I will say that I have 27 years total, and 18 years on the sax's.... Rolling Eyes
JPSaxMan

Nice, sounds like ya got quite a repitore (sp?) Cool

I've been playing 6 years, and I'll be playing into college, become a professional, and play till I die!
Jacob

Currently 19 years old.
Yani-992

legomaniac853

8, I think. missed a couple of years in there, so only about 5.5/6 total. I'm don't play at my best because I don't practice as much as I should. I'm finding that I really like doing it though, so I want to learn more woodwind intruments.

BTW, I'm only 18, started in sixth grade.

I'm really glad I found this forum. Will be lurking constantly. Post every once in a while.
