Your Jazz Band Set-up

In your jazz band, how many people were in it, and at which instruments? At the jazz honor band we had 6 trumpets, a bass guitar, 6 saxes( 4 altos, 2 tenors including me :D , and a bari, percussion, 5 trombones, and a piano. At my school jazz band, there was 2 saxes, both altos, I was lead alto, 3 trumpets, two trombones, percussion, and a piano.

This year we have

Three altos
Two tenors
One bari
8-9 trumpets
One trombone
Three drummers
Two piano/base players
Maybe a guitar player

That's bout it. I think the director should cut a few trumpets because they SUCK! Evil or Very Mad Evil or Very Mad

The two altos need improvement, the one alto has been doing it for a while but will be new to it in jazz band. My second tenor needs work for he'll be doin sax for only two years, and his ego gets in the way but that's all right...he'll get put in his place one day. Twisted Evil

Does your parish, oops, I mean county, have a Honor Jazz Band?
JPSaxMan

Well this is our school jazz band. Pffttt...an Honor Jazz Band...that's funny...not at the school I go to..no way José Sad
CMelodyMan

No, not for your school, for your parish or county.
JPSaxMan

Only thing we have is District and All-State jazz band and I might do District next year...wanted to do All-State but seemed pointless considering I didn't even do District.
CMelodyMan

Yeah, that's what I meant, District Jazz Band.
Thomas

This last year, the Jazz 1 setup was as follows:

- 2 Alto saxos (1 was me, of course)
- 2 Tenor saxos
- 1 Bari saxo
- 4 tromboners
- 4 trumpeters
- 1 guitarist
- 1 pianist
- 1 bassist
- 2 drummers

Over the past 2 years, Jazz 1 has steadily worked its way to rock bottom. Almost all the good players have graduated, and I only see a few people with hope for next year. Our trumpeters are sheepish, quiet people, which just puts the stereotype to s***. The one trumpet who could actually hit a high C has graduated this year, too. It will be a sax-dominated band next year.

I fear for the future of the music program at my school... Rolling Eyes Confused

Last year's setup was something like

Seven saxes:

Two altos

Three tenors (one on first, two on second)

Two Baris (but it was mainly me, as the other didn't show up)

Seven 'bones: Two on each except for 1st.

Six trumpets: Two on 2nd and 4th

Three pianists, one bass, two 'rummers.

That was our top jazz band. This is what it looks like this year.

Seven saxes: three altos, two tenors, two baris (i'd rather there be 1 bari and three tenors)

Five 'bones

Five trumpets

2 pianists, one bass, two 'rummers

We haven't had guitar for like three years.
homeslice60148

here it goes:

2 Clarinets (or Crumpets as we call them, since they play trumpet parts)
2 altos
2 tenors
3 bones
4 trumpets
1 Bass guitar
1 piano
2 percs (set and either auxilliary or vibes)

That's right, no Bari saxes. Strange, since one of the alto players is (probably) going to be the TX All-State Jazz bari. Go figure.
JazZz

My jazz band this year is:

2 alto's
2 tenor's
4 trombone's
5 trumpets
2 guitars
1 upright bass
2 drummers
2 pianists

not too big, but we have an amazing sound.

-----
There is a district jazz band, but i'll found out how big it is when I nail the audition in a week or two Cool
Jacob

Our band's pretty small, but it's getting bigger...anyway, small is good.

2 altos
1 tenor
1 bari

4 trumpets
2 trombones

1 piano
1 drums
1 vibes
1 guitar
2 basses
altosax4ever

BIG!

As we don't have auditions, we let everyone in, Mr. Green

we have...

9 Exclamation alto saxes (i'm lead: mrgreen: )
5 flutes
7 trombones
6 clarinets
4 tenor saxs
3 bari saxes
14 Exclamation Exclamation Exclamation drummers (they alternate)
4 guitars
2 pianists (alternate)
3 vibes

We're more of a big band than jazz band...
remind me if I missed something....
O, and we do NOT have a soprano sax Crying or Very sad
JazZz

Don't think 9 is a lot ha..last year in the unauditioned jazz band we had something like 20 alto's, 8 tenor's and 3 bari's... The reason for the huge number was the fact that in the unauditioned groups you had the chance to learn a new instrument for the fun of it as our teacher owned a million of everything. He did however make leads stay with their original instrument, so I was stuck teaching 10 kids in an afternoon class how to play sax twice a week for 3 months Evil or Very Mad . The only kids by the end of it who didn't understand where the flute kids, which made no sense to me. Every time they messed up (honked) they just sat their giggling and thinking it was all funny that they could make a sound out of such a foreign thing =/
Louis Scuderi

We do have auditions, we only let 9 people in.

2 Tenors
2 Trumpets
1 Trombone
1 Flute

1 Piano
1 Bass
1 Drums
altosax4ever

Um....where's the alto?
JPSaxMan

Even 9 altos are way too many for a jazz band. 4 are considered at the edge. You only need two (one for each part). This is how District Jazz Band is setup, and if you don't make #2 (or #3 and maybe #4 depending on how many players will move from the instrument) you're out! Cool

No altos, four altos tried out, not one got close to making the cut. Confused
altosax4ever

pathetic much? I'm so ashamed of my usergroup... Embarassed
Tully

I really enjoy playing in a one-on-a-part band. For one thing, it lets the lead player--myself--actually play lead!
JPSaxMan

Yes, Tully!!! I agree fully!!
DdogonGod

In Jazz I, we have as follows:
2 altos
2 tenors (1 being me)
1 bari
4 trombones (1 being a bass trombone, i believe it's called)
4 trumpets
1 bass (who plays upright 4 some songs n electric 4 others, depending on style)
1 drummer
1 pianist

I'm not sure 'bout Jazz II, which is open to any jazz instruments. I know the director doing Jazz II (we have two band directors) had to do some recruiting.
Hiya

1 Clarinet
1 Trombone
1 Bass
1 Guitar
1 Flute
1 Pianist
1 Vibes
2 Drummers
3 Trumpets
4 Altos
4 Tenors
