Tenor Reed, Alto Mpc

Is it unheard of to play a tenor reed on an alto mouthpiece?

I was in a stick one day for reeds during marching band practice, so I got a tenor reed, shaved it down just a little and threw it on my alto mouthpiece. I noticed that it got the little more edge I've been wanting for marching and I used it for a little while until I had to switch out reeds. A few people thought it was a stupid idea, but I think it sounded great outside.

You can probably get that 'edge' just by using a harder (and/or different brand) alto reed. I doubt the size alone has all that much to do with it.

I agree, you can get reeds you can shave them until you're getting the sound u want.

I agree. The size of the reed has little or no effect on obtaining that "edgy" sound. If you really want an "edgy" sound, try Rico Jazz Selects. Very Happy

Ya that'd probably work. I think I stopped using Rico Jazz Select because they became edgy (used to be nice and clear).

Being the lead alto out of 3 in my marching band, I really need an edgy sound to cover for the fact the other two don't play Mad I tried a bigger sized reed (ponzol) and it worked very well. I wouldn't suggest using ponzol's for anything but jazz or just trying to be edgy, but when you need them they sound, as my director said, "most superb".

I think i'll go out and try the rico's (thanks saxmaniac) i have a general dislike for rico's, but everyone has been saying use the jazz one's because their good, are the jazz one's the bright orange box or the black box?

thanks alot for all the help!
