Yamaha YAS-23This is Yamaha's student model alto. I have played several of these and have an unwavering opinion about them.
These horns are awesome! I have never played a pro alto, but these horns feel like the best student horns avaliable today. They play effortlessly all the way down to low C...altissimo is good, ergonomically solid, and they sound great too! I would recommend this horn for any student...it might even last them into their college years!

i would totally agree you cannot beat a yamaha student model .. i currently own a YAS 475 and it has the most amazing tone to it ... Nicky xx

I use a 23 alto, and I love it. I'm planning on sticking with my YAS-23 until I go to college. (tenor being my main sax)

Not really...ok, I'm all for the student yamahas. but I REALLY don't think you can compare it to the pro horns out there. BELIEVE me, I've played both the yamaha and pro horns and it doesnt COMPARE. Sorry. You CANNOT change my mind on this one.

And I'm sure you're right (for most pro horns are better than student horns). I hope I get the honor to play a pro alto in the near future

Apologize if I sounded curt. It was a bit scary that they said it was as good as a pro horn. Sorry. Hey, if you want to try a pro, go to the local music store, tell them you're in the mood to buy an alto. They'll let you try anything.

Nonexistent in my area, I'd have to go to Philly, which is about 3 hours south of here...not gonna happen

Yamaha Student. I have to agree that they are the best student alto's out there.  My local music store is about 15 minutes by drive. But sometimes the traffic is bad out there on the bridge.

Oooooooooooooooo..............found out that the YAS 475 is on sale, and only alittle more than the YAS 275.
Should I get the 475 Instead?

As far as I know the 475 would be better than the 275. Go for it

Having played both the 23 and the next model up (450? 475?) tenors, I couldn't tell the difference. The spendier one was exactly the same, but with a high-F# key.
