What chair are you?

What chair are you? I'm first chair, and it's been that way ever since I started taking lessons.
JPSaxMan

Second tenor in jazz and wind ensemble
First bari in concert band
Whatever chair alto in jazz band (I'm like the special guest soloist in jazz band Laughing ) and sometimes I help out the younger group on alto. Cool
Doc Frazier

first chair alto sax, sax section leader AND president of The Shreveport Metropolitan Concert Band @ LSUS
CMelodyMan

Shreveport Metropolitan Concert Band...first chair, that's pretty impressive.
JazZz

First chair alto in wind ensemble, & jazz
Woodwind Captain and saxophone section leader in marching band
Thomas

Well, I guess my school just sucks, then. We don't have chairs, we just hand the first, second, and third parts to whoever wants them. My school (Victoria) is the only public K-12 school in Canada, so our high school is a lot smaller than most other schools. As a result, we have very few band students, and often have to combine the 20 and 30 classes. Therefore, there aren't enough students to even have first, second, and third chair. I'm finally realizing that I made a mistake in going to this school. Oh well, one more year left...

Band camp is completely different, though. There are actually good, experienced musicians there, and everyone is auditioned. Their performance is assessed, and they are actually placed in real first, second, and third chairs, as it should be. That is the only really fulfilling musical experience I have all year, and it only lasts for 2 weeks... :x Evil or Very Mad

If we did have an ideal band program, then I would indeed be first chair. Bah. High school band isn't all it's cracked up to be, anyway.
Bleeding_Gums_Murphy

I'm lead alto in concert band and jazz band, and I have been since I started Cool
tenorsaxman

Once school starts back up, I'll go for 1st chair tenor because the other tenors in my band either suck or don't want 1st chair. I'll try that for alto (after I get it fixed if I get it fixed :o )
Thomas

Just call up Dave, he'll fix your horn up for you! :D
saxmaniac

I'll fix it for ya Wink .
Thomas

Yeah, you too! And Doc, can't forget him! My bad. :P
saxmaniac

Yes, and of course Doc :P !
joboe

We didn't have chairs in fifth and sixth grade, but I was often the "first chair", which meant I was on the end. In seventh, I was fourth alto before switching to bari. I was first (and only) bari until sophomore year, where I was third. Last year, I was first, and I'll stay that way this year, since our other bari player in concert rarely shows up.
musicalprodigy

i'm second chair of 5 people.
Tully

Principal flute in orchestra and wind ensemble (that's the top concert band of two), lead alto in jazz band, flute/piccolo section leader in marching band.
Gandalfe

Tully's being modest. He also has an open invitation to play with the Woodinville Jazz Ensemble on tenor sax. If school didn't get in the way, he'd probably be playing more regularly. (That durn school.) Wink
sista

i have een first chair 2 years running. hopfully ill be 1st chair this year(know I will) Very Happy In jaaz band i should have been first but my teacher gave first to a person in a higer grade probaly 1st chair this year
JPSaxMan

An update on my chair position:

I am now first tenor in the jazz and wind ensembles.

I am principal bari in the bari section (the whole two of us Embarassed) in our concert band.

And of course, I am a guest alto soloist in the jazz band and if I ever find time I will be helping out our JR concert band on alto or bari. And last but not least, I am teaching the 6th grade class of saxophone players advanced technique for my graduation project (starting on Thursday Twisted Evil)

LOL. Sorry my post comes off as so pretentious; it didn't hit me until I read back over it!

I sure wish I still had time for the WCB jazz band--that was a lot of fun. By the way, Jim, you did get the tenor book back, right? I left it in the milk box as instructed. You are absolutely right about school, too; I never thought I would be this busy this early in the year! I guess busy is preferrable to idle, but it sure isn't too relaxing!

Anyhow, the lead alto thing was actually sort of a fluke. I had been planning on playing tenor, as I did last year, but a few weeks before school started, I found out that none of the alto players from last year were returning, so the seat was basically mine if I wanted it--talk about good luck!

Finally, congrats on getting lead in all your groups, too, Joel. It always feels good after a lot of hard work. BTW, you've got to send me another clip of your tenor playing--I'd love to hear how you and the Dukoff are getting along.

Let's see...

In high school-

Freshman year: 2nd alto in jazz band II, 4th alto in concert band (10 altos)

Sophomore year: 1st tenor in jazz band II, 1st alto in concert band

Junior year: 1st tenor in jazz band I, 1st tenor in concert band

Senior year: 1st tenor in jazz band I, 1st tenor in concert band
altosax4ever

I'm...

I'm first chair alto in Jazz and Concert Band, with an invitation to play in one of the local jazz bands whenever I want. It's a nice gig, and great for experience.
DdogonGod

I am like 4th "saxophone" in our worse concert band and 1st tenor, although we only have 1 tenor part for 2 tenors. I am second tenor in Jazz I though. This is not bad, considering I am only a freshman in high school (only freshman in jazz I). The chair placement tests for concert band are the same every year so naturally you have more of an advantage as a senior.
reisio

I was first chair alto in concert and jazz bands throughout Middle & High school, but there wasn't any amazing competition or anything. Got 1st chair alto at the University of North Florida's summer jazz camp one year...I think oddly enough the competition was even less amazing there - the more advanced players were doing tenor.
BariSax37

Im 1st chair of my band. see we have 4 bari's in our school and 4 bands. im in cadet, sarah's in concert, matt's in symphonic and John is in Wind Ensemble
Tully

Wow, four bands? How many students in your school? There are about 1900 in mine, and we have two large bands.
BariSax37

we have 1265 students and 4 small concert bands and 3 small jazz bands. our marching band consists of 264 and our varsity band(half time shows) consists of 112
Louis Scuderi

There are 650 kids in my school (Pre-K-12), and there is ony one high school band, and there are no "chairs".
JazZz

whoa..and I was depressed that my school had no people O_o

my school has 450 (9-12) with about 65 kids in all the bands combined (marching, jazz, concert) with a lot of overlap. here's an update of my chair position through the year.

freshmen: 3rd Chair Top Wind Ensemble, 1st Chair Jazz II (second highest) All on Alto
Sophomore (in new school): 1st chair concert band (only band), 1st chair Jazz band. All on Alto. When I play trumpet i play 3rd trumpet and when I play bari or tenor i'm 1st. I'm 6th chair out of all the saxes in the county (40+) I'm just too cool for school Cool
Hiya

Symphonic Band - 1st Alto
Concert Band - 1st Alto (Well, until I changed bands)
Jazz Band - 1st Alto
Honor Band - 1st Alto
tenorsaxman

This year I 'm first chair clarinetist in band, first chair oboist in orchestra, lead tenor (and maybe flute if I can convince my direcctor to let me double) in improv class. Hopefully it will stay this way until I graduate high school
JazZz

so I got my chair standing for the start of next year:

Marching Band:
Woodwind Captain
Saxophone Section leader
3rd Chair Mellophone

yea yea..spare me, I already got it from my section that i'm selling out and going to play french horn. The size of our band pretty much multiplied by 1.5 and we still only have french horn. Me being pretty proficient on trumpet got asked to go to mellophone

Jazz Band:
Top Band: 1st Chair Alto Sax / Soprano Soloist
Bottom Band: 3rd Chair Trumpet / Baritone sax

Concert Band:
Wind Ensemble: 1st Chair Alto Sax
Bottom band: 1st Chair French horn (over the freshmen!)
JPSaxMan

I actually might be changing some chairs around this year.

In Wind Ensemble I might be moving from tenor to alto, but I was the only tenor player this year and unless my BD can find a replacement, I'll be stuck on tenor but one of our two alto players graduated this year. Sad...that there's only two altos in W/E. In Concert Band I might be moving from bari to tenor b/c the only tenor player graduated this year and we have a new bari player coming in (I think) from the junior band. So we'll see.

In jazz band I might be moving from tenor to alto b/c that same alto player that graduated was in jazz band and we're losing another alto player as it is, so we'll see on that one too.

Interesting stuff Very Happy
