Rico Royal Graftonite mouthpiece

In search of a cheap, bright, and loud alto mouthpiece to use in a funk band, I bought a Rico Royal Graftonite C7 (the brightest and most open one) for about $14.50 including shipping on eBay. I tried it out this afternoon, and much to my surprise, it's fantastic! They obviously won't work for everyone, and pehaps mine is exceptionally good, but don't overlook the Graftonites if you're after a cheap, but IMO excellent, mouthpiece.

I've played on the B5 and B3 for tenor, and was always amazed at them! I know a guy who uses them regularly on gigs, so they're just fantastic pieces often overlooked because of the price factor. Oh well...glad ya found something good Tully! Cool

I tried a Dukoff a week or two ago, and I actually prefer the C7 Graftonite.

What kind of Dukoff Tull?
Tully

D7, for alto.

And what didn't you like about it?

I thought it was rather hard to control, especially down low, and the tone in the low register got a little hollow-sounding. The intonation wasn't working for me, either.

Actually, of all the high-baffle alto mouthpieces I've tried, I'd have to say a Vandoren Jumbo Java A95 was the best (unforunately, it wasn't for sell). It had the edge and volume of the Dukoff, but with a fuller sound, and could be made to sound a lot warmer if need be.

Tull, I hate to say it, but I might be jumping on the Link train with my tenor...sorry to de-rail the thread for a minute, but I had tried out my band director's Otto 8 at District jazz and although I had too hard of reeds on atm, I liked the sound I got; bright (as in warm bright...not edge bright) but it had character and warmth to it, and it wasn't edgy. It was like...holy crap, here's what I've been looking for all along! I'm going to try to get another trial session with it to make sure I really want a Link, but for now, I'm still on the Dukoff wagon! Cool

Links are definitely worth looking into--I'm sure you already know this, but try every one you can get your hands on, because some of them absolutely suck, but when you find a good one (like your director's), you'll know it! Was his current production, Florida, early Babbitt...?

I know his was older, but I have no idea on the date. Should be an interesting trial...
