I always believed in some warm (going to hot) water followed by a wipe to wipe out the water in the chamber and to wipe off the bite place and any other exterior surface.
Some good sterilizing mouthpiece spray wouldn't hurt either...I don't find it as effective but you might change your mind

As discussed in another thread, you probably don't want to use warm water on nonmetal mouthpieces.
I just use some germicide spray I bought at some music shop...every once in a great while; like when I change the mouthpiece pads.

Warm water is ok with HR pieces, just not scalding hot. Then it will re-shape the rubber (think of plastic over a fire...it melts!). Warm water also brings out that rubbery smell of the HR...prolly due to the lil bit of heat it does get, but it's not damaging or anything.

So just dishwasher soap and warm water dshold be ok? What about toothpaste? I've heard of some people using toothpaste to clean their mpcs..

I don't know about toothpaste--I would assume, though, that sense it is intended for use in one's mouth, it should be OK.

Dishwasher soap is fine; you can use it on any kind of mouthpiece you want. It's a neutral substance, so it won't damage the material. You wouldn't want to use any type of acid to clean it, especially on metal.
Personally, I wouldn't use toothpaste, because it contains calcium salts, which are abrasive and can be damaging to the mouthpiece.
Another thing you never want to do is to clean it with plastic bristle brushes. Those are meant for brass instrument mouthpieces, but some music stores sell them under the saxophone acessories. Repeated use of these brushes will scratch the mouthpiece, and cause the shape of the inner chamber to change, thereby affecting your sound.
