Sax Story

Last Thursday (March 2nd) my Junior High symphonic band took a trip out of the country to Victoria, Canada for a band festival. One of the pieces we played was The Three Ayres From Gloucester. In the 2nd movement, I had a big alto solo (some of you may remember because I requested help on it a while back). Well after I played my solo, the first thing the judge said was "That was an amazing solo. Let's all give the sax player a round of applause." Everyone started clapping for me. :O My B.D. told me that that was the first time it had ever happened.

This was my first time that I experienced anything like this and I felt like I just had to share it.

Do you guys have any of your own sax stories to share?

I can remember during a dress rehersal I had taken a solo on Evil Ways. After the song was over, the band director's friend came over to the section and was like..."Who did that alto solo?" and when I raised my hand, his eyes lit up and said, "Geez man, I thought David Sanborn walked in the room for a minute!". My band director's friend is a regular gigger on bass, brass, and vocalist. So....that was cool. Then my drummer friend (best drummer in the school and in District 9 Very Happy) had to come over and shake my hand and proclaim his absolute excitement over the solo.

So I guess once in a while we can get people to go crazy. That's a good story Hiya, glad you had a good experience with your solo! Cool

I was doing a solo performance in jazz band on the bari. AFterr words the judge stood up and asked "Who was that bari sax player?" I stand up my head high and he said, "You suck" lol Thank God I got better lol

Laughing...are you serious? I woulda rammed that bari up that judge's rear if he had said that! No, not really...but wow...

lol ya im serious, and yes I agree with the ramming my bari up the rear, I threaten all my friends with that if they ever bring up that story lol

Jason, that is terrible. That person should be ashamed. How are you supposed to make anything constructive from such an inmature comment like that? Good for you for not taking it too hard, I would've been in tears.

haha..i'm glad you got better, crazy story.

but honestly, the only way some people get better is if a judge flat out says something like that. I can honestly think of 1 or 2 saxes who need some criticism like that in my band and the director and other people are too weak to tell them that. And lets face it, a judge is someone who you meet once and probably will never see again or remember the day after so he has nothing to be afraid of. I have only ever had the same thing twice.
It would be quite a spectacle though to see the bari player fight back, they are loaded and dangerous!
