Selmer Reference 54 Alto

Well my friend and i have come down to buying an alto for him, he's narrowed it down to, SELMER REFERENCE 54 and KEILWERTH SX90R.

What do you guys think he should buy. The keilwerths about 500 bucks cheaper than the Reference 54. Which one. He's a jazz and classical player.

Can the horns be tried out?

I'd go with Selmer just because I'm a Selmer nut, but otherwise it's a toin coss. So...I dunno but your friend is very lucky and I wish him luck! Mr. Green

I hope you narrowed it down to these two horns by playing them and many others...otherwise you're cheating yourselves.

My friend and I both tried the horns and we said that the selmer did sound a little better. we're not sure if it's worth the money. (500 bucks more)
reisio

What's $500 when you're already spending thousands.

Good point resio,

But of course if one sounds better than the other, by all means, go for it. Just one thing to keep in mind...

The Keilwerth has rolled tone holes, which are different than the traditional straight edge tone holes such as the one on the Ref 54. Come time for repairs, this might be something to keep in mind. Confused??:

rolled tone holes.. is that good or bad...
Altosaxophonerules

I was also mentioned on the internet that the reference 54 had some diffuculties in the lower register. When i tried the horn, I did find the hitting C and D a little wobbly. Can that be fixed, an expensive repair?
JPSaxMan

It is a common problem in the Ref horns and it can be fixed for a minimum price.

Rolled tone holes aren't good or bad, they're just unconventional. Not very commonly found, if you will Cool

Reference 54 alto we go. We've decided to buy the sax. (let's see if we can get any freebies, reeds, books) Laughing
JPSaxMan

Very good choice, I congratulate your friend on this new horn....how long has he been playing? If he drops it or dents it, I will hunt him down and kill him Laughing Mr. Green
Altosaxophonerules

He finally got his horn, he's inviting me over to his house to listen to his NEW horn. He told me he was playing for like 5 hrs after we got the horn, he says he loves the sound of it. We also got some freebies, I got: Neotech Neck Strap, Vandoren ZZ 10 reeds, Vandoren V16 10 reeds. (he gave them all to me)

Reference is the way to go! You totally picked an awesome horn Very Happy
altosax4ever

I agree!

It is a great horn, but I prefer the super action myself. Never could get into those refs. They don't really suit my style.
