Vandoren reedsIMHO, and in the experience that I've had with them, Vandoren reeds aren't very good. My private lesson teacher claims they produce, a richer, fuller, sweeter, less reedy sound than Ricos, but it didn't do that for me. I bought a box of ten Vandorens, and every one of them produces a weak, dark sound, totally unlike what everyone says they sound like. Does anyone wanna back me up on this? Is anyone else here feel this way about Vandorens?

I wouldn't say I hate them, but I think they are very inconsistent. Usually, there are no more than 4 good playing reeds per box. In order to get mostly good reeds, you have to ask to see an open box and pick the good ones, but you end up going through three whole boxes to find 10 good playing reeds. I find alexanders and rico royals to be much more consistent (8-9 excellent players for every ten reeds)

I like Vandoren's in general. I play on Blue Box Vandoren for tenor (switching to ZZ's )....I play ZZ's on alto and will play ZZ's on bari eventually. I have played on Hemke reeds on alto and tenor. I liked them on alto, with the exception of the fact they magically chipped themselves. On tenor, I didn't care for them b/c IMO they were too stiff. With the exception of Hemke's I've only played on orange box Rico's which IMO are meant for the little kiddies who don't know anything about reed selection or size or sound or whatever ??:.
So maybe I need to play on some Alexanders, some other good Rico's, and maybe LaVoz or whatever before I can make a 100% solid opinion, but for now, Vandoren's are my favorite

I've actually found that if I sand down the reeds a little bit then they'll actually play half-decently.

I will be playing on LaVoz medium's for bari (the school bought a whole box of em :D)...I bought a box of ZZ's and Blue Box Vandoren's for the tenor.

You're finally playing on a reed made by a Rico-owned reed company! Now I'm that much closer to converting everyone from Vandoren reeds to Rico reeds!

But if I had to buy reeds for bari, they'd be Vandoren's...

Maybe you got some that are too thick. Maybe you didn't break them in properly.

Actually they play pretty well now, but I still prefer Ricos.

I have tried MANY different reeds, and end up using LaVoz on alto and Vandoren on tenor...go figure. I've tried Ricos, Rico Royal, RJS, LaVoz, Java, Blue box, ZZ, and some cheapo reeds from a local music store. An I like LaVoz on alto and ZZ's on tenor.

I like Vandorens, they can be inconsistent but they sound great.
Alto: Jazz: Vandoren ZZ Classical: Vandoren Blue Boxes
Tenor: Jazz: Vandoren ZZ Classical: Rico Royal
Soprano: Jazz and Classical: La Voz
I seem to be a big fan of Vandoren, I have tried reeds that sounded better than them, but after I looked at the price tag of the other reed, WOW!

I use Vandorens too! Classical ones though. The V16s are softer than the classical box. Vandorens are nice, i like a darker sound
