Which is jazzier, zz's or javas?

Which reeds produce a jazzier, more edgy sound, Vandoren ZZ's, or Vandoren Javas?
JPSaxMan

CMel we already have this topic Sad
CMelodyMan

No, we have a topic discussing which is the best jazz reed, RJS, Java, or ZZ'S. I want to know which Vandoren reed is jazzier, ZZor Java.
JPSaxMan

Alright. I've never played Java's but I love the ZZ's. My alto just wails with them! I'm getting them for my tenor and bari and we'll see how they sound! :D Cool
CMelodyMan

You have your own alto, tenor, AND bari sax?
JPSaxMan

Hehe...I could only dream....

I do have my own alto and tenor...the school's bari is basically mine. Signed out to me for my use until I'm out of school. And it's brand new so I plan on getting a bunch of goodies for bari since I'll be using it in band and in pit orchestra! :D

I've played all the vandoren reeds (a box of 10 & various sizes on all) but i've only played one ZZ but in my opinion the Java provides a clear edge over all. It depends on how much of a 'jazzy' tone you want because the ZZ gave me a deep mottled tone and the java gave me a medium to a very bright open tone (great for when you're going pretty high in a jazz piece). I was able to go up and hold high F-G with the java's consistently. I prefer the bright and open tone most of the time. ZZ & Java are very good reeds to get a jazzy tone on though.

If you've ever heard of Jay Easton, he owns at least one sopranino, soprano, mezzo-soprano, alto, c-melody, tenor, c bass, bass, contrabass, and sub-contrabass saxophone. I think he also has several clarinets. That's quite a collection! However, he is a pro sax player, so his situation is somewhat different. Still, that's pretty incredible to be able to devote your time to so many instruments of the same family!

Here's a link, which is the main page of his many saxophone sites:

I have spent hours looking at this, and have learned so much! It is an excellent resource for any sax player!
