Yamaha YBS-52

This might be an intermediate bari but I feel it can compete with the big boys. It's lower range is just...roar...can't describe it any other way. Just big and phat. :D

You are correct in your assumption and this horn is actually a band director favorite. There are "Pro" horns out there that do not even come close to the 52. On another note, the 62 is arguably the best Bari EVER MADE. EVER. Did I say EVER? Yamaha has changed ALL of their horns over the past 20 years with the exception of these two. There's a reason why.

Please tell me (us) why the 62 was the best bari ever made in your opinion? Ever try Selmer? Just wondering. Cool

you're faithful, i can tell. you never fail to suggest a selmer.

let me ask you something, though. have you tried many other brands other than selmer before you made your decision on which brand you like best? Wink
JPSaxMan

Hehe...let me be honest. I've never tried a Selmer horn in my life Laughing . I just know of their reputation and after playing on my own Selmer and after heard my director play his SA80 I'm not leery in recomending it! Cool

Ahem, back to the 52...

Have you all noticed that the brass seems slightly thinner on the 52 than the 62? It dents easier and stuff. Still, I can't see that alone justifying the 2K price difference between the 52 and 62.

Are you sure about the 52 having thinner brass? That makes no sense, why would Yamaha make the model that they plan band director's will be purchasing and students will be using less durable? Evil or Very Mad

I don't know. I've always heard that Yamahas are usually very weak. They bend pretty easily. But I've never had one to confirm this.
JPSaxMan

LS you do bring up a valid point tho WTF
Bariman

I see what you're saying (addressing the wall thickness), and it sort of defies logic, but then again, brass cost money, and the thicker the walls , the more brass, soooooo, the more expensive instrument would be the one with the thicker walls. And yes, I do have a confirmation on this info from a Yamaha representative.

I have to disagree with CMel's comment about Yamaha's being weak. Their student models are said by many to be the toughest student horns out there. Still not sure about the 52's... Rolling Eyes

I normally play a B52 in jazz and concert, and I love it. Just something about it in my hands makes me want to go crazy. I don't care that it's only considered an intermediate model. The thing is so cool. I love pulling it out and just playing. Low notes are so clear, and even the upper register sounds good.
