There is a great interview with Branford Marsalis on the web in which he talks about Dexter Gordon's sound, and how it relates to John Coltrane. In his opinion Dexter Gordon created the sound that Coltrane got the credit for on the Prestige recordings. Consequently Dexter Gordon went on to re-invent his own sound a second time... The whole interview is on PDF and is very interesting, as he talks about many aspects of jazz and musicians...It's also very amusing in places!

Let's see...out of current players, I've really been enjoying George Garzone, Chris Potter, and Jan Garbarek lately.
Jacob, I have to agree with you that Trane's best tone was the Blue Note era. What I wouldn't give to sound like that! _________________ My sound clips. |
