Hi, there:

I think it's sad that Jimmy Dorsey is not on any of those lists. I'd really like to know what he played, wondering if he played a Buescher or New Wonder possibly. Anyway. If anyone knows what he played, I'd really enjoy learning that.

I'm somewhat sure Dorsey played a Selmer, actually. There was even a Dorsey model, which I believe was similar to the Balanced Action.

JD played a 16K cigar cutter Selmer alto until 1939, after that he played a Selmer "Dorsey model" alto which is recognizable by having the left hand bell keys with a solid key guard...same type guard as used on modern saxes on the right side. The cigar cutter has a "wire" guard on the left side. Pics of all these are on saxpics.com, and elsewhere, in particular you can see the Dorsey model in many photos of JD. He played a 4 facing (.067) with a long facing, and a #3 Rico or Vandoren reed, and a standard (for the time) ligature. JD played out of the right side of his mouth, the story being he practised so much on cornet (he was giving stage performances at age 8 ) that he damaged his lip and when he switched to sax and clarinet at age 12 he had to accomodate the injured lip. Check out his embrochure sometime in photos. Incidentally, he played a Pensil-Mueller clarinet. The Dorsey model was so called because he played it, but in fact smatterings of them were made from S/N 24K to 29K, and it was a product for sale to anyone and was not particularly successful as it was more expensive.
