Everyone knows that Adolphe Sax was the inventor of our wonderful instrument. But was he any good at the instrument he created? By good I mean, comparible to any average modern-day saxophonist?

That's a very interesting question, Dave. What I do know is that the saxophone was only one of his many creations. He was also the inventor of the bass clarinet, euphonium, and the portable timpani. In his lifetime, Adolphe invented many crazy things (many of them musical instruments, of course). He could have been good at any one of his instruments, but I think it's unlikely that he played all of them regularly.

I knew that, it's just the sax far surpasses all of his other inventions  . BTW, you're wrong on a few things. First, he invented the saxhorn, not euphonium, which is an ancestor of the modern tuba, euphonium, and baritone. Also, he didn't invent the bass clarinet, he just added some really major changes to it. |
