How close do you keep your fingers to the keys? I try to always have my fingers touching the keys, but when I'm playing really fast my fingers just fly all over the place.

My private instructor is trying to keep me from 'flying' so now I'm keeping them almost glued to the keys! _________________ JP

To be honest it depends on the type of song.jazz I let my fingers fly/classical as close to keys whenever possible _________________ Tenorsaxman!

90% of the time I keep my hands on the keys. Unless of course I'm playing in the higher register, and/or using alternate fingerings, then it's pretty difficult, and highly impractical to keep every finger on a key. _________________ Thomas Hay

Yea, this is what my instructor has said several times. If I have to do an altissimo fingering or use the palm keys the fingers come off everywhere needed. _________________ JP

| Generally my fingers are glued to the keys. If I use my palm keys my fingers come up a little, and if I go altissimo they come up a lot. When I really get into jazz, my fingers go all over the place when I try to 'feel' the song or plan an improv while playing. |
