For bass sax, I think the only virtuoso out there was Adrian Rollini. He's long dead, and the recordings of him are hard to find, but man, he could play bass! I think he did some baritone work, but not nearly as in depth as his bass stuff.

Some other great saxophonists that I like are: Stan Getz, Lee Allen, Frank Morgan, Don Byas, Benny Carter, Coleman Hawkins, Gerry Mulligan, Phil Woods, Art Pepper, and Ben Webster, just to name a few. Smile

Cannonball Adderly! Gotta love him on 'Kinda Blue'. One of the, if not the greatest cool jazz album of all time. Bill Evans on the piano...his best work (and I've listened to nearly all his work). It's Miles' best work too.

For me there can't be just one...

Jazz: Getz, Coltrane, Rollins, Parker, Dexter Gordon, Lester Young, Coleman Hawkins, Ornette Coleman.

Classical: Sinta, McAllister, Teal, Rascher, Mule

It's not a matter of who's the best, but of who you like the best. It's all subjective. Sure, we can point to Charlie Parker as an innovator, which he was, but was he the best? That's a matter of opinion, which is neither right nor wrong. I can't stand Kenny G. either, but for some people, he's the best. It's just either a matter of taste or exposure. Frankly, he can play, but it's what he chooses to play that annoys many people. But again, because I dislike someone doesn't mean you're supposed to dislike him, or that my taste is superior to yours, and vice versa. However, it points to what an incredibly versatile instrument the sax is because it can be used to play just about any musical style.
