I still don't understand why beginner saxophonists blow $1,500+ on a new student model sax when they can get a used pro model sax in decent condition for half or less the price. Why doesn't there band director tell them about some good pro brands, instead of telling them to buy cheap, junk student horns?

If I was a band director then that would all change.

Indeed Dave, it is ludacracy.

My LaVoix is not considered student nor pro, but a nicely built horn for around the price you described. The Yamaha 475 is also another nice horn at that price. So, beats me Confused??:

There is a difference between 1500 and 3000. When say, some one around ten years old decides he wants so start sax. What do the parents do? Look at this "student" saxophone and look at this "Reference 54". About $3000 dollar price difference, and the parents are probably far from assured that their child is going to stick with this instrument.

My two cents.

Cheers,
CR

Indeed LS, that's what my parents did with my brother.

Only THEN after you're sure (after listening to your child over seven years practice and improve and develop a passion for it) you can get your child a Ref 54. My brother didn't pursue the passion, so it's probably a good thing my parents didn't get him a pro model horn to start off. Shocked

Sometimes, begginers have a hard time playing on saxes designed for pros. It's something about certain characteristics of a pro sax that resists a younger embrochure.

This is true bariman, but I don't think a new student tries a YTS-23 and a YTS-82Z and feels a big difference. Maybe they will after they have stoppped renting.

Do you have any recomendations? Know of anywhere to buy used horns? I've been using my cheap student sax for about 2 years, its time for a change.

Sax Alley is a good place to start. Also http://saxquest.com/trading.asp]Saxquest's free trade section. If you're willing to go that way, i'd try some classified sections of some other Sax forums around. Tons of stuff everyday on those sites.
