Hello All,
I'm from Edmonton, Alberta......any fellow Canadians here?
Have played piano since 5 yrs old, and also trombone, violin, viola, descant and treble recorders through school (I got to meet Carl Dolmetsch when I was 10 - cool!). Then, at the ripe old age of 45 I took up tenor sax - I think because of being always denied a reed instrument through my youth (school had only one clarinet, but an abundance of violins).
Passion for jazz (Dexter Gordon, David Murray, Sonny Stitt.......NOT a huge 'Bird' fan, sorry to say) and more recently, funk (Liquid Soul, Brotherhood of Groove, E-Coule Sax, Tower of Power).
I recently developed a yearning to play Bari, and, since my band desperately needs a replacement Bari player, I may luck out and get to use one for free!

Looking forward to jiving with you all!

Hi guys!!
Thanks for all your responses - well I FINALLY got it!!
*##! - it's HUGE!!! Straight from an overhaul (it's a school band instrument.......a Selmer????......rich school!!!)
I didn't realise they were that big!! (As Adam said......"stand back, I don't know how big this thing gets!!" LOL!!) - and it weighs a ton in the case.......might have to shell out for a soft case, as carrying that and my tenor will cripple me!!

Well, it's a Selmer (Paris) series II - low A - I just found the low "A" key too - below the left hand thumb rest - oh boy - and I'm going to be playing this 'thing' in 2 weeks??? The action feels smooth enough, similar to my tenor SA80 II, but the left hand pinky keys are a little more of a stretch.......

Got a choice of mouthpieces too - Selmer S90 "E", Meyer 6, and assorted other junky ones - have a couple of reeds - Rico Blue Box 3, Rico Jazz 3 - going to try to get some DC Superials tomorrow, and a decent lig (EDII).
So I guess it's a few days of long tones!!
Any 'quick tips' on how to get a decent sound??
Also, HOW do you dry out the inside.......a pad-saver won't fit....and I'm not sure how to get a swab through this beast with a curly neck!!

You don't have to worry about it...there's a spit valve that just drains all the spit from your use afterwards. Therefore there is very little moisture within the pads and there is no need for a padsaver or w/e. Cool

That sax will treat you well, and you should have no problems with it if it isn't too banged up. Yes, long tones are essiential, but practice your scales both slured and sticcato/spiccato. You must learn how to aggressively use your diaphram to punch out those low, short notes. It takes a lot of practice.
