Obscure fact #1: He enjoyed drinking a glass of warm water between sets at some gigs to refresh his mind.

Fact #2 (not really obscure): Coltrane named his son Ravi after Ravi Shankar (sitarist), who was a spiritual influence of his during the 1960s.

I knew he played on a Selmer Balanced Action tenor. I think I might have seen him with a Mark VI, but that's up for debate. He played on Otto Link pieces. He also played a Mark VI (I think?) soprano. If it wasn't a Mark VI, then it was another SBA. Not sure what alto he played, and I knew he did play an alto, I saw a picture of him with one, just not sure what it was.

What kind of reeds did he play on? Or don't we know? Confused??:

Pretty close. He played Rico 5's.

He was known for playing his 5-and-5 set-up, which was the above reeds with a metal Link 5. However, some say he played Rico 4's with a metal Link 5* (which suggests he played both set-ups at some point).

This is a very interesting movie of the Classic Quartet featuring McCoy Tyner, Jimmy Garrison and Elivin Jones:

It was said that when the quartet played live, it was even a workout for the AUDIENCE. If there was one gig I wish I could have lived to hear, it would have been his Vanguard date(s) with Tyner, Garrison, and Jones... and Eric Dolphy.
