I find it AMAZING that noone here seems to play both clarinet and flute.
In order to become a professional sax player, it is VERY important to be able to double on them. Oboe and bassoon also help to give you that extra versatility that helps you get gigs.
I play:
sop/alto/tenor/bari sax
clarinet
flute
oboe
guitar
drums
latin percussion

With all due respect, I beg to differ. Of course, there are plenty of jazz superstars, as it were, that play just sax. However, a lot of less well-known musicians depend on the gigs they can get by playing sax, flute, and clarinet, plus whatever else they can. One example would be my sax teacher: although jazz sax playing is what he really loves, he plays the Reed 1 book at all the Broadway-style shows here in Seattle, and also has a much wider student clientele since he teaches clarinet and sometimes flute. Very few people seem to earn a living doing nothing but playing sax. If you can/do, that's awesome. It just doesn't work out very often, so IMO, it's best to be prepared for a more likely situation. _________________ My sound clips. |

| I think versatility is important. As well as specialising in one instrument, it is extremely useful in my experience to have a good knowledge in at least another (piano as a wind player is very useful) and basic knowledge of a couple other instruments. As well as giving you more possiblities for work, it gives you a much better understanding of the functions of each instrument in a group. Particularly if you are a leader of a band it is very important to have a good awareness of the functioning of the other instruments...composing and arranging would be another useful skill to add. |

I couldn't agree more, especially regarding piano. _________________ My sound clips. |

Well, I play saxophone, flute and I'm learning clarinet, if that's any consolation! I'd love to be able to double in shows/gigs. I also play a bit of piano and guitar, but not much.
Now...what I'd like to also be able to play is a different question. I would love to be able to play all instruments...but unfortunately, time and money restrain. So I'm picking them up, one at a time, slowly... |

in theory I can play flute..i can finger all the notes and i can sight read music normally with it but I can't hold an embouchure for more than like 3 seconds..flute is really hard to get steady and I just didn't have the patience for it (and when I played it in the practice rooms girls gave me funny looks ) |
