As we don't have auditions, we let everyone in,
we have...
9 alto saxes (i'm lead: mrgreen: )
5 flutes
7 trombones
6 clarinets
4 tenor saxs
3 bari saxes
14 drummers (they alternate)
4 guitars
2 pianists (alternate)
3 vibes
We're more of a big band than jazz band...
remind me if I missed something....
O, and we do NOT have a soprano sax _________________ Music IS Life

Don't think 9 is a lot ha..last year in the unauditioned jazz band we had something like 20 alto's, 8 tenor's and 3 bari's... The reason for the huge number was the fact that in the unauditioned groups you had the chance to learn a new instrument for the fun of it as our teacher owned a million of everything. He did however make leads stay with their original instrument, so I was stuck teaching 10 kids in an afternoon class how to play sax twice a week for 3 months . The only kids by the end of it who didn't understand where the flute kids, which made no sense to me. Every time they messed up (honked) they just sat their giggling and thinking it was all funny that they could make a sound out of such a foreign thing =/ |

Even 9 altos are way too many for a jazz band. 4 are considered at the edge. You only need two (one for each part). This is how District Jazz Band is setup, and if you don't make #2 (or #3 and maybe #4 depending on how many players will move from the instrument) you're out! _________________ JP

No altos, four altos tried out, not one got close to making the cut. _________________ Louis Scuderi

I really enjoy playing in a one-on-a-part band. For one thing, it lets the lead player--myself--actually play lead! _________________ My sound clips. |

In Jazz I, we have as follows:
2 altos
2 tenors (1 being me)
1 bari
4 trombones (1 being a bass trombone, i believe it's called)
4 trumpets
1 bass (who plays upright 4 some songs n electric 4 others, depending on style)
1 drummer
1 pianist
I'm not sure 'bout Jazz II, which is open to any jazz instruments. I know the director doing Jazz II (we have two band directors) had to do some recruiting. |
