We didn't have chairs in fifth and sixth grade, but I was often the "first chair", which meant I was on the end. In seventh, I was fourth alto before switching to bari. I was first (and only) bari until sophomore year, where I was third. Last year, I was first, and I'll stay that way this year, since our other bari player in concert rarely shows up.

Tully's being modest. He also has an open invitation to play with the Woodinville Jazz Ensemble on tenor sax. If school didn't get in the way, he'd probably be playing more regularly. (That durn school.) _________________ Sop, alto, tenor, and bari sax

An update on my chair position:
I am now first tenor in the jazz and wind ensembles.
I am principal bari in the bari section (the whole two of us ) in our concert band.
And of course, I am a guest alto soloist in the jazz band and if I ever find time I will be helping out our JR concert band on alto or bari. And last but not least, I am teaching the 6th grade class of saxophone players advanced technique for my graduation project (starting on Thursday ) _________________ JP

LOL. Sorry my post comes off as so pretentious; it didn't hit me until I read back over it!
I sure wish I still had time for the WCB jazz band--that was a lot of fun. By the way, Jim, you did get the tenor book back, right? I left it in the milk box as instructed. You are absolutely right about school, too; I never thought I would be this busy this early in the year! I guess busy is preferrable to idle, but it sure isn't too relaxing!
Anyhow, the lead alto thing was actually sort of a fluke. I had been planning on playing tenor, as I did last year, but a few weeks before school started, I found out that none of the alto players from last year were returning, so the seat was basically mine if I wanted it--talk about good luck!
Finally, congrats on getting lead in all your groups, too, Joel. It always feels good after a lot of hard work. BTW, you've got to send me another clip of your tenor playing--I'd love to hear how you and the Dukoff are getting along. _________________ My sound clips. |

I'm first chair alto in Jazz and Concert Band, with an invitation to play in one of the local jazz bands whenever I want. It's a nice gig, and great for experience. _________________ Music IS Life

| I am like 4th "saxophone" in our worse concert band and 1st tenor, although we only have 1 tenor part for 2 tenors. I am second tenor in Jazz I though. This is not bad, considering I am only a freshman in high school (only freshman in jazz I). The chair placement tests for concert band are the same every year so naturally you have more of an advantage as a senior. |

| I was first chair alto in concert and jazz bands throughout Middle & High school, but there wasn't any amazing competition or anything. Got 1st chair alto at the University of North Florida's summer jazz camp one year...I think oddly enough the competition was even less amazing there - the more advanced players were doing tenor. |

Wow, four bands? How many students in your school? There are about 1900 in mine, and we have two large bands. _________________ My sound clips. |
